Cookley’s first excursion into the National Village Knock-Out this season ended in an agonising 14-run defeat at Bretforton.
The Cotswolds League side were made to fight all the way by the villagers who dismissed their opponents for 185 in two overs short of the allotted 40 overs. Adam Meacham, Charlie Barton, Jat Dhadwal and Jon Stanaway took two wickets apiece.
In reply Cookley openers Matt Holloway(31) and Adam Matthews(18) got their side off to a promising start against a lively home attack and Dave Huntsbach(22) and Stanaway(30) continued with the run chase. At the halfway stage Cookley looked well on course for victory having got half the runs for the loss of just three wickets.
Ashley Rhodes(12), captain Mark Bennett(27) and Dhadwal(11) got the visitors within reach only for the effort to peter out at 171 with three wickets still in hand.
Both scheduled games were called off through rain last Saturday while this week the first team are away at Enville looking to continue their good form in the League. Meanwhile the Second team will entertain Feckenham at Lea Lane.
